Expressing Your Inner World Through Writing
There is a prevalent misconception regarding Christian songwriting that suggests if you acquire sufficient knowledge about tips, tricks, and shortcuts, you can evade the laborious process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a dedicated Christian songwriter. It is essential to have a deep and meaningful connection with God, which serves as a wellspring of inspiration. When you possess this connection and strong songwriting abilities, you won't need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write with clarity and confidence will always be readily available whenever you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The fast-food culture in which we live has influenced us to adopt a mindset that seeks instant results, similar to what CHATGPT or AI can achieve. We believe that we should be capable of generating a song within a matter of seconds by simply providing a few prompts, and that it will impress everyone.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or easy solutions. Instead, they are skilled Christian songwriters who communicate their message at a profound level through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song randomly and accidentally stumble upon a masterpiece like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the arrival of the prominent figures, these individuals were already deeply engaged in studying and striving to excel in their artistic pursuits. They consistently sought to enhance their skills in the art of crafting impactful words and melodies, creating captivating compositions that could truly touch the emotions and captivate the hearts of their audience. Their goal was to create something profoundly moving, possessing that indescribable and irresistible "WOW" factor that resonates deeply with listeners.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more time and effort he dedicates to practicing, the more fortunate he seems to become in his game.
These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in a deceptive manner. They are dedicated and committed songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly learning and practicing advanced techniques in poetry and lyrics. These are the individuals who are investing their time and effort to create music at a much higher standard than most aspiring writers are willing to commit to.
We hold great respect for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their exceptional contributions to Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without the powerful impact of Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, it is important to remember that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their craft and have faced numerous challenges in order to refine their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or "hooks" overnight, and this is especially true for Katy Nichole, a rising star in Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs online since she was fourteen years old, and her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it went viral by luck, but that's not the case. Katy has been dedicated to her music for years, and we applaud her for her hard work and success.
Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous methods to nurture and expand your inner life. Here are three key aspects to consider while striving to enhance and articulate your faith through music.
Make soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves caught up in busy and chaotic routines, leaving very little time for self-care. While it is important to show love and compassion towards others, we must not neglect our own need for rest and rejuvenation. Taking care of ourselves is crucial for maintaining a healthy inner life, which is closely interconnected with the well-being of our outer life and physical body.
Nourish your mind. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and assume that focusing solely on Bible study, prayer, and worship songs is sufficient for a holy life. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the significance of deep reading. They comprehend that it is impossible to create remarkable lyrics if they themselves are not well-versed in them. If you have ceased reading extensively after completing college or even high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Simply indulging in fear-inducing news or reinforcing your cultural biases through network or cable news is not enough. If you desire to write something impactful that can endure beyond your lifetime, it is essential to enrich your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.
Disconnect from negative influences. Cable news is solely focused on increasing their ratings by instilling fear. Even channels claiming to be Christian are guilty of trying to anger their viewers in order to keep them watching and exposed to their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also depend on high ratings and sponsorships to maintain their jobs. However, the constant stream of negativity they promote is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and creative abilities. Take a break from consuming any news for a few weeks and instead spend that time in quiet contemplation, reflecting on the love and goodness of God. You may find that your newfound positivity begins to overflow into your creative endeavors. Negativity steals away your joy and contributes to feelings of fear and anxiety. Allow yourself a respite and refocus your heart and mind on the Spirit of Jesus.
Christian musicians and lyricists such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more, create their music based on their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, to some extent, to their expertise as Christian songwriters. I greatly admire the famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
While you work on improving your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also focus on nurturing your inner life. It is crucial to offer something new, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your songs, rather than just repeating the same old phrases and ideas that have been heard for years.
