Expressing the Depth of Your Inner World
There is a prevalent misconception regarding Christian songwriting that suggests if you gather sufficient tips, techniques, and shortcuts, you can avoid the arduous process of acquiring the skill to create impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, having a deep connection with God and being a dedicated Christian songwriter is more important than relying on tips and tricks. When you possess a strong relationship with God and have excellent songwriting abilities, you don't need to search for shortcuts or quick fixes. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always within reach, especially when you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

Our modern society, heavily influenced by technology and instant gratification, has conditioned us to expect quick results and immediate success. This has led us to believe that we can achieve the same level of proficiency as advanced artificial intelligence systems like CHATGPT. We mistakenly believe that by simply providing a few prompts, we should be able to effortlessly create a song within seconds, and that it will be universally acclaimed.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts. These writers are skilled practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting and effectively communicate their message through their music. They don't simply attempt to write a song and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the prominent figures arrived, these individuals were already dedicated to honing their skills and striving for greatness in their field of art. They consistently worked on improving their abilities to create impactful lyrics and melodies, constructing captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with listeners, evoking strong emotions. They aimed to create something extraordinary, possessing an indescribable quality that instantly captivates and leaves a lasting impression.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more I put effort into practicing, the more fortunate I become.
These individuals are not seeking out free workshops or giveaways for Christian songwriting. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly improving their skills and exploring advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. Unlike many aspiring writers, these women and men are committed to investing their time and effort to produce work of a much higher caliber.
We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years of their lives to perfecting their skills and have faced various challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or "hooks" overnight, and this includes the rising star Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old, so her success with the hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" is not a result of mere luck. She has been dedicated to her craft for many years. Congratulations to Katy for her hard work and achievements!
Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous avenues to enhance and nurture a deep and meaningful inner life. Here are three essential considerations to remember as you endeavor to expand your faith and convey it through your music.
Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and busy lives, we often neglect to take care of our own souls. Although it is important to care for and serve others, if we do not also take time to rest and replenish ourselves, we will eventually experience burnout. It is essential to recognize the importance of self-care and to consider it as crucial in maintaining our inner well-being, which is closely connected to how we care for our outer life and physical body.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of engaging their minds and mistakenly believe that solely focusing on Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs is sufficient for a holy life. However, the most exceptional songwriters understand the significance of delving into deep reading. They recognize that it is impossible to craft extraordinary lyrics without first immersing themselves in profound words. If you stopped pursuing reading after college, or even high school, it is vital for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear and biased perspectives through network or cable news does not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that can transcend your own existence, enriching your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works is an absolute necessity.
Disconnect from negative influences. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear to attract viewership. Even channels that claim to cater to Christian audiences thrive on inciting anger to keep viewers engaged and watch their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also rely on high ratings and sponsorships to maintain their jobs. However, the constant stream of negativity they propagate is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and creative expression. Consider taking a break from consuming any kind of news for a few weeks and instead spend that time in quiet reflection, contemplating the love and goodness of God. You may find that your newfound positivity overflows into your artistic endeavors. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a hiatus and allow Jesus' Spirit to fill your heart and mind once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others create their music from a place of deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their exceptional talent as Christian songwriters. A quote by Australian golfer Gary Player comes to mind, as he famously said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
While you focus on honing your Christian songwriting skills, it is important to also nurture your inner self. It is crucial to offer the world something fresh, daring, courageous, and empowering through your music, rather than simply repeating the same old clichés and concepts that have been around for years.
