Creating from a Deep Inner World

There is a widespread misconception about Christian songwriting that suggests that by acquiring a sufficient amount of tips, techniques, and shortcuts, one can avoid the arduous process of learning how to create impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a dedicated Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep spiritual connection with God and draw inspiration from it. If one possesses this connection and strong songwriting abilities, there is no need to search for shortcuts or quick fixes. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence will always be accessible when one feels the presence of the Holy Spirit in their heart.

The modern era of fast-paced technology and instant gratification has shaped our thinking in a way that makes us believe we can replicate the abilities of advanced artificial intelligence systems like CHATGPT. We have developed a mindset that expects us to effortlessly generate a popular song within a matter of seconds, simply by providing a few prompts.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or tricks. Instead, they are individuals who are skilled in the art of Christian songwriting and are able to effectively communicate their message. They don't simply attempt to write a song one day and accidentally create something as powerful as "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Even before the major opportunities presented themselves, these individuals were already dedicated to perfecting their craft. They consistently worked towards honing their skills in creating impactful lyrics and harmonies, constructing captivating compositions that could deeply touch and resonate with audiences. They strived to evoke an indescribable feeling of awe and emotion, something that instantly captivates the listeners' attention and leaves a lasting impression.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more effort and time I put into practicing, the more fortunate or successful I become.

These individuals are not actively seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated and motivated songwriters who are already engaged in their craft, constantly improving their skills and exploring the most sophisticated techniques in poetry and lyrics. Unlike many aspiring writers, they are willing to invest a significant amount of time and effort into their work, truly paying their dues and striving to create at a much higher standard.

We hold great admiration for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years of their lives to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, including the rising star Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old, and her popular hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" might seem like it was a lucky break, but that's not the case. Katy has been dedicated to her music for years. Congratulations to her on her success!

Tips for Cultivating a Deep and Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are various approaches you can take to nurture and enhance your spiritual journey through music. Here are three key considerations to bear in mind as you strive to develop and convey your faith through your musical compositions.

Make soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves overwhelmed with countless responsibilities and little time to take care of our own well-being. However, it is crucial to make time for ourselves and ensure that we are not neglecting our own need for rest and rejuvenation. While it is important to be compassionate and helpful towards others, we risk burning out if we do not also take care of ourselves. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize self-care and view it as an integral part of maintaining our overall well-being, which includes both our inner life and physical health.

Nourish your mind. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and assume that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential aspects of a sanctified life. However, the most skillful songwriters understand the significance of delving deep into various sources of knowledge. They recognize that it is impossible to create extraordinary lyrics without first immersing themselves in a wealth of words. Merely relying on the information provided by network or cable news, which often feeds one's fears and reinforces cultural biases, is insufficient. If you aspire to write something that can truly make a lasting impact, it is crucial to enrich your mind with profound literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.

Disconnect yourself from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on increasing their ratings through fear mongering. Even the so-called "Christian" stations rely on angering you to ensure you keep watching and endure their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio, shock jocks, and even conservative pundits maintain their positions by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they propagate is detrimental to your soul and creativity. Consider abstaining from all forms of news for a few weeks and instead spend that time in quiet reflection, contemplating the love and goodness of God. You may find that your positivity begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals away your happiness and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow Jesus' Spirit to fill your heart and mind once more.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more are able to write music that comes from a place of abundance in their relationship with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talent and proficiency as Christian songwriters. It reminds me of the famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who emphasized that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.

As you work on nurturing your ministry in Christian songwriting, it is important to remember the importance of cultivating a deep and meaningful personal journey alongside developing your songwriting abilities. The world is in need of fresh and revolutionary ideas from you, rather than simply regurgitating the same old phrases and concepts that have been heard for years.
