I really appreciate and enjoy using modular and experimental systems for synthesis. I recently took some time to explore InfernalSynth, and I'm happy to discover that there is a new version or continuation of it.
Currently, Firefly is not at the same level as its predecessor in terms of progress or characteristics. However, it does show a lot of promise for future development and improvements in the coming months and years.
To start with, Firefly Synth is currently only available for Windows and Linux operating systems. Unfortunately, Mac users will need to find an alternative as it is not compatible with their devices.
The synthesizer has four oscillators that are essential components, and each oscillator has numerous operational modes to choose from.
You have the ability to utilize all four options to create simple waveforms, two Karplus-Strong algorithms, and AM and FM synthesis. However, it is unfortunate that granular and additive synthesis modes are not included, but the available options still provide a significant amount of capability.
The signal is directed to a section dedicated to applying effects to each voice separately. You have separate DAHDSR envelopes for each voice, which can be further adjusted using individual LFOs and filters. All of this is connected to a comprehensive modulation matrix.
Each voice in the synth has its own distortion feature, which is a beneficial addition. The synth is complete and operational, except for the absence of an FX plugin. To fully utilize it, you should have a good understanding of synthesis, as there are no pre-established settings available.
Nevertheless, InfernalSynth was an impressive tool, and I believe that Firefly Synth will not only match but also surpass the capabilities of its predecessor in the future.
The software works on the majority of the devices I use. However, the developer has mentioned that it is not supported on Renoise. But it works perfectly fine on Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One. As for the system requirements, you will need a 64-bit CPU with AVX support if you are using Windows or Linux.
The synth supports VST3 and CLAP as plugin formats. I really appreciate the synth's FM capabilities, but I have a fondness for any synth that combines different types of synthesis in one software.
