I have a great appreciation for synthesis systems that are modular and unconventional. Having previously explored InfernalSynth, I am delighted to discover that there is a new version available.

Currently, Firefly falls short in terms of its development and features compared to its predecessor. However, it shows a promising potential for growth and improvement in the upcoming months and years.

To begin with, Firefly Synth is currently only compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems. I regret to inform our Mac users that they will need to find alternative options.

The heart of the synthesizer consists of four oscillators, each offering several operational modes.

There are four different methods available that can be used to create basic waveforms, two Karplus-Strong algorithms, as well as AM and FM synthesis. However, the options for granular and additive synthesis are not included, which would have provided more diversity in the available synthesis modes. Nonetheless, the existing options still offer a significant amount of capability and versatility.

The signal is directed to a section dedicated to applying effects to each voice separately. Each voice has its own DAHDSR envelopes that can be adjusted even more using individual LFOs and filters. All of this is connected to a comprehensive mod matrix.

Every voice in the synth can have its own distortion, which is a fantastic feature. This synth is complete in terms of functionality, except for the absence of an FX plugin. To fully utilize it, you will require an understanding of synthesis since there are no pre-programmed settings available.

Nevertheless, InfernalSynth was an exceptional tool, which leads me to believe that Firefly Synth will not only match but also surpass the abilities of its predecessor in the future.

The software functions properly on the majority of my hosts, although the developer mentions that it is not compatible with Renoise. However, it works well with Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One. As for the system requirements, you will need a 64-bit CPU with AVX support if you are using Windows or Linux.

The synth supports VST3 and CLAP as plugin formats. I am particularly fond of its FM capabilities, but I also appreciate the fact that it combines various forms of synthesis into one package.

If you are looking for more choices in terms of modularity, you should definitely explore the impressive ModulAir plugin created by Full Bucket Music and the Blocks software developed by Soonth. Another remarkable option worth considering is the VCV Rack, a virtual modular playground.
