Renowned country singer Margo Smith, who gained popularity in the late 1970s and was affectionately called "The Tennessee Yodeler," has passed away at the age of 84. Throughout her career, she was known for her remarkable talent in both country and Christian music genres, leaving behind a rich collection of chart-topping hits.
Betty Lou Miller, who later became known as Smith, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Her passion for performing was sparked by a television show in her hometown, which motivated her to learn how to yodel from a young age. However, rather than pursuing a career as a country star, she made the decision to become a teacher.
According to AllMusic, her unique journey to fame started when she began singing in her classroom and later at parent-teacher association gatherings. This eventually led to opportunities to perform on the radio, which then led to her creating a demo record and ultimately signing a recording contract.
Starting in 1979, Smith started to express her femininity in more noticeable ways. "Still a Woman," a song that was a huge success and made it to the Top 10 charts, was particularly daring.
In the chorus, she sings, "Simply close the door and switch off the light. The plane is set to take off tonight. Brace yourself tightly as we soar through the sky. Remember, I am still a woman."
In 1979, Smith's album "Just Margo" had a bold cover where she was depicted wearing a satin robe, which was considered daring at that time. However, in 2024, the outfit might resemble more of a housecoat. Despite her declining popularity on country radio, Margo's willingness to discuss sex and incorporate provocative elements into her concerts helped boost ticket sales.
Out of the blue, she transformed back into her role as a teacher from Ohio and admitted feeling sorry for this particular phase in her life. According to Music Row, she began embracing the Tennessee Yodeler persona in 1983, but ten years later she had transitioned into a more conservative mindset. Alongside her daughter Holly, she adopted the name Margo Smith and Holly, and they achieved success as an acclaimed Christian country duo.
Smith relocated to Florida during the later stages of her life, where she dedicated herself to yodeling and made a living by imparting her yodeling skills to others. One of her notable students was Taylor Ware, who gained recognition as the runner-up in America's Got Talent in 2006. Eventually, Smith returned to Nashville, but sadly passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.
Only a few days ago, she experienced a stroke. Smith is survived by her husband, Richard Cammeron, as well as one son, two daughters, and other relatives.
