Remembering the Legacy of Country Singer Margo Smith: From Bold Hits to Christian Country

  • by

Margo Smith, a well-known country singer, has passed away at the age of 84. She was a highly successful artist in the late 1970s, and was later recognized as "The Tennessee Yodeler". Throughout her career, she released numerous country and Christian hits that have left a significant impact.

Smith, originally named Betty Lou Miller, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Her passion for performing was ignited by a television show in her local area, and she even acquired the skill of yodeling at a young age. However, she made the decision to pursue a career in teaching instead of following her dream of becoming a country music star.

According to AllMusic, the singer's unique journey to fame began when she first started singing in her classroom and later during meetings organized by the parent teacher association. This eventually led to opportunities for radio performances, which in turn resulted in her creating a demo record and ultimately securing a recording contract.

Smith started to openly express her femininity in a more pronounced manner starting in 1979. One of the standout tracks from her album A Woman, titled "Still a Woman," achieved significant success by reaching the Top 10 charts. This song showcased Smith's

At the chorus, she sings, "Simply close the door and turn off the light. The plane is going to take off tonight. Hang on tight because we're about to soar through the sky. And remember, despite everything, I am still a woman."

In 1979, Smith's album Just Margo had a bold cover, where she was seen wearing just a satin robe. This was considered daring at the time, although in 2024, the outfit would be more like a housecoat. Despite her declining popularity on country radio, her openness about sexuality and her provocative stage performances helped increase ticket sales.

After a sudden change, she reverted back to being the teacher from Ohio and showed remorse for this particular phase in her life. According to Music Row, in 1983 she began to adopt the identity of the Tennessee Yodeler, but ten years later she transitioned into more conservative beliefs. Alongside her daughter Holly, she formed a successful Christian country duo named Margo Smith and Holly.

During the later part of her life, Smith relocated to Florida where she dedicated her time to yodeling. She made a living by teaching others how to yodel, with one of her notable students being Taylor Ware, who was the runner-up on America's Got Talent in 2006. Eventually, Smith returned to Nashville and passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.

Only a few days ago, she experienced a stroke. Smith leaves behind her husband, Richard Cammeron, as well as one son, two daughters, and other relatives.

Instead of sending flowers, the family is kindly requesting that a donation be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
