Charles Kelley’s Candid Revelation: How He Escaped a DUI and Found Sobriety

  • by

Charles Kelley, a member of the country music group Lady A, has been open and honest with his fans about his process of achieving sobriety. However, there is one particular event that he has not addressed before, until recently. Kelley has now revealed that there was a time when he came close to receiving a DUI while driving under the influence of alcohol.

In an interview on Elizabeth Vargas' Heart of the Matter podcast, Kelley confesses that when he consumed alcohol, it became a regular habit for him to have "four or five drinks" while playing golf and then drive back home.

Kelley confesses that they were operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The distance they had to cover was only 10 minutes, but there were instances during the drive where they realized how foolish and hazardous their actions were. The following day, they reflected on the situation and realized the potential consequences, acknowledging that they could have caused harm to someone else or even lost their own life.

On a specific occasion, Kelley had a close call with being charged with DUI. This incident took place during Christmas when his wife Cassie and son Ward were away for a few days, granting him the freedom to consume alcohol without any familial responsibilities. Kelley enjoyed a day of golf and drinks at a nearby bar. As the night neared its end, fellow patrons began expressing worry about whether Kelley intended to drive home.

"I thought to myself, 'If I don't drive back, my wife will ask, 'Where's your car?'', even though I could have retrieved it the following morning. She wouldn't have been aware since she wasn't present," he recalls.

However, with a strong determination to return home alone, he discreetly exited the rear of the bar and proceeded to drive away. Within a brief distance towards his own residence, he was stopped by law enforcement.

Kelley shared that when the police officer inspected his driver's license, the officer recognized him as a member of a band. Kelley confirmed this and was surprised when the officer decided not to arrest him for driving under the influence. Instead, the officer instructed Kelley to pull his car over and personally drove him home. Kelley expressed his astonishment at not receiving a ticket and considered himself lucky to have avoided a potentially troublesome situation.

Nevertheless, the occurrence served as a reminder for Kelley that he needed to inform his spouse about the incident.

The singer expressed their feelings by saying, "I reached a point where I felt completely drained. I had just been pulled over, and it was a close call that could have had severe consequences on my life. Additionally, it would have caused a lot of negative attention for the band."

He made a firm decision to stop drinking alcohol and managed to resist the temptation for three months through sheer willpower. However, he eventually relapsed and fell back into his previous habits of drinking. It took another year for him to finally seek professional help and fully dedicate himself to achieving sobriety.

Following his rehabilitation, it didn't take much time for Kelly to inform Lady A fans about his struggle with alcohol. The country trio was transparent with their fanbase, explaining that the postponement of their 2022 Request Line Tour was to prioritize Kelley's early stages of sobriety. This decision to be honest was made by Kelley himself. On the other hand, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood proposed finding alternative explanations for the band's absence on tour.

Kelley stated that she was not ashamed of her actions and acknowledged that what she had done was extremely difficult. Instead of taking the easy way out by continuing to drink and destroying everything, she chose to be honest with herself. She expressed gratitude for the situation and saw it as a turning point that led her to share her experience. As a result, things have progressively improved in a positive and beneficial manner.
