"Earl Had to Die: The 20 Greatest Country Songs about Killing Your Partner"
Traditional country music often includes murder ballads as a prominent theme. Although these types of songs are not as common in modern times, there is still a collection of exceptional songs about men killing their female romantic partners. On the other hand, songs about women committing murder are less frequent but still exist in the country genre. We have compiled a list of these songs to showcase their presence in country music.
We had to set some parameters to narrow down the contenders for this list. We decided to choose only one song per artist, which means that even though Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert have multiple murder songs in their catalogs, they were only represented by one song each. Although songs like "Before He Cheats," "Church Bells," "White Liar," and "Kerosene" are all excellent revenge anthems, they were ultimately overshadowed by even bigger songs and didn't make the final cut.
The criteria for making it onto this list was quite specific. Only murders with male victims were considered, which meant that Ashley McBryde's "Martha Divine," although a great modern murder song, didn't qualify. Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" and The SteelDrivers' "If It Hadn't Been for Love" were also worth mentioning, but they didn't make the final cut.
Presented here is an impressive and morally dubious compilation of the top country music songs that embody the desire to harm or take the life of a man. Take a look at our selection of the most satisfying revenge tracks and lesser-known gems that revolve around the concept of murder, particularly targeting the man in one's life (or persuading someone else to carry out the act). Keep reading and feel free to inform us in the comments if we overlooked your preferred song about eliminating your significant other.
