Country music has a long history of featuring murder ballads as a prominent theme. Although they are not as common nowadays, there is still a collection of exceptional songs about men killing their female partners. On the other hand, songs about women who commit murder are less frequent but still exist within the country genre, and we have compiled a list of them.
We eliminated certain contenders for this list based on specific criteria. Our main focus was to include only one song per artist, so even though Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert have multiple murder songs in their catalogs, they were only given one slot each. Although songs like "Before He Cheats," "Church Bells," "White Liar," and "Kerosene" are all excellent revenge anthems, ultimately, other songs with even greater popularity took precedence in the final selection.
The theme was quite specific, which further narrowed down the selection. In order for a murder song to be included in this list, it had to involve at least one male victim. Therefore, even though Ashley McBryde's "Martha Divine" is considered one of the best modern murder songs in the genre, it was not included. There are also honorable mentions for Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" and The SteelDrivers' "If It Hadn't Been for Love," but they did not make it onto this list either.
We have compiled a collection of the most remarkable and wicked country songs that revolve around killing someone. Take a look at the list below to find the top revenge hits and lesser-known tracks that focus on the theme of murder, particularly targeting the man in one's life. Keep reading and don't forget to inform us in the comments if we overlooked your favorite song about getting rid of your man.
