Earl Must Go: The 20 Greatest Country Songs About Taking Out Your Partner
Songs about murder have always been a prominent theme in classic country music. While they may not be as common today as they once were, there are still many excellent songs about men killing their female romantic partners. Although less frequent, there are also songs about women who commit murder in country music, and we have a list of them to showcase.
Several factors eliminated some top choices for this list. We only included one song per artist, so artists like Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, who have multiple songs about revenge, were limited to one slot each. Although songs like "Before He Cheats," "Church Bells," "White Liar," and "Kerosene" are excellent revenge anthems, they were ultimately edged out by bigger songs in the final selection.
The theme was focused enough to limit the selection even more. To be considered for this list of murder songs, the song had to involve a male victim, which meant Ashley McBryde's "Martha Divine" did not qualify, even though it is considered one of the best modern murder songs in the genre. Other songs that deserve recognition include Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" and The SteelDrivers' "If It Hadn't Been for Love," but they also did not make the final list.
The remaining selection is a collection of the most powerful and sinister songs in country music that talk about killing someone. Take a look through the list below to find our top choices for songs about seeking revenge and hidden gems on the topic of murder – particularly, killing a man in your life or getting someone else to do it for you. Keep reading, and don't forget to leave a comment if we overlooked your favorite song about taking out a man.
