The Final Bow: 6 Chilling Last Concerts from Country Music Legends

  • by

There have been several haunting final concerts by legendary artists such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Daryle Singletary. George Jones was aware that his performance would be his last, while Daryle Singletary was not, which added an eerie quality to the song he decided to close the night with.

Following Merle Haggard's death, a story circulated claiming that Toby Keith assisted him in exiting the stage gracefully for his final performance. However, this story turned out to be false as Keith was not present at Haggard's last show, nor was the person who fabricated the story.

In reality, actor W. Earl Brown was not present at the show where Keith assisted Haggard. He had only heard about it from someone else.

Taste of Country found a review of Merle Haggard's last concert and uncovered a special moment that was just as noteworthy as the story about Toby Keith's act of heroism. This moment is one of six memories from Haggard's final concert, which can be seen in the video above and in the pictures below.

The video includes the final performance of John Denver, the last song of Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings' made-for-TV farewell, creating a bittersweet viewing experience.

We really enjoy the Singletary performance. If you've heard Johnny Paycheck's song "Old Violin," you'll understand the connection. If you haven't, make sure to continue watching.
