Lady A Reflects on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reminisces about their most memorable moments in country music, both good and bad. They have achieved great success as a country group, winning numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards over the span of nearly two decades.

The way they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s when Myspace was popular. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have achieved success.

I inquired about their most memorable experiences in the country music industry, and the trio did not disappoint with their responses. Kelley was the first to share.

When we first performed at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' I don't think I'll ever experience that same feeling of disbelief and excitement like I did then, thinking, 'Wow, this is actually happening.'

Scott also had a very cherished memory that he held dear.

According to her, the best day they had was when they were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Dave Haywood followed up on Scott's response by expressing his agreement with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry, our families visited from out of town, and it was a very special experience. It was emotional and surprising in a positive way.

However, it hasn't always been easy for Kelley. She remembers a specific "worst" day when they were stuck in a difficult situation on what should have been a great day.

"Ugh, I just found out that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but at the same time, our bus broke down on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very painful day, which she considers one of the worst days, when she and the group, along with many artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as a moment of great sadness.

Haywood recalls a difficult moment in his country music career when Kelley accidentally struck Scott in the face with the microphone, a mishap that did not involve him personally.

Scott describes how his lip was injured accidentally during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage when he and Charles Kelley got in each other's way, causing Charles's elbow or wrist to hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.

Then suddenly we started singing "Need You Now," she goes on to say, "and it was so intense… we were really getting into the performance when he suddenly pointed out, 'You have blood on your teeth.'"

Lady A's three members found a particular story amusing, suggesting that it may have become a cherished memory over time. The complete, unedited interview can be listened to on the Taste of Country Nights podcast, available on various platforms. Just search for it wherever you listen to podcasts.
