According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform alongside Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, may make an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the artists, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's popular song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. As reported by Variety, she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team stated in July that while there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be very enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans appreciating her song. She also mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. The award is given to the songwriter of the winning song, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of "Fast Car," became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read on stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I was unable to attend this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a special appreciation to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
