According to insiders familiar with the situation, it has been reported by Variety that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. "Fast Car" is a popular folk-pop song from the late '80s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Reports from Variety indicate that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity did come up.
Chapman, who has been keeping a low profile since the song gained popularity again, has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and gratitude towards the new fans who have embraced her song. Chapman mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given only to the songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
