According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite not frequently making public appearances, Chapman may make an exception for this event.
Based on information from sources connected to the musicians, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. This song was originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which unexpectedly became a hit on country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most memorable moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. His team released a statement in July confirming that while there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Even though she has been mostly private about the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her music. She mentioned that she never imagined being on the country charts, but feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, and Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since its first release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he is successful, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted live from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for streaming on Paramount+.
