Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Grammy Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance: What to Expect

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the public eye, may be making a rare appearance at the event.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, which was the end of her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team released a statement in July stating that although there are no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be excited if the opportunity presented itself in the future.

Although she hasn't been in the spotlight much since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness and gratitude for the new generation of fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This honor is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter of the song. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of "Fast Car."

Combs' song "Fast Car" is up for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
