According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Luke Combs is also rumored to be performing alongside her at the event.
According to sources familiar with the performers, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs introduced a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that they currently do not have any plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be enthusiastic if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Although she has kept a low profile regarding the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness and gratitude for the new fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, and Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as a solo songwriter. Even though Chapman wasn't present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a big thank you to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards ceremony. If he is successful in winning, it will be his first Grammy award.
In February 4, 2024, the 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
