Lady A Reflects on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music: From CMAs to Bus Breakdowns

  • by

Lady A reflects on their most memorable moments in country music, both the highs and lows. With numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards under their belt over almost two decades as a band, they are considered one of the most successful country groups in history.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his Myspace page. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discussed their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have progressed.

I inquired about the trio's memorable experiences in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first to share her stories.

When we had our first opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we sang "Love Don't Live Here." The artist expressed feeling a sense of disbelief and excitement, thinking, "Wow, this is actually happening."

Scott cherished a favorite memory very much as well:

Her favorite memory was when she received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry as a member, which she considers their best day.

Dave Haywood followed up on Scott's response by expressing his agreement with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience because all of our families came to town to support us. It was a very emotional and special moment for us.

However, it hasn't always been easy and perfect for Kelley. She remembers a specific day that she considers the worst, when they were stuck in a situation that had the potential to be one of the best days.

"Ugh, it's frustrating to learn that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts while our bus broke down on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and the group, along with many other artists in country music, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the most devastating moment.

Haywood recalls a difficult day in his country music career when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone. This incident, which did not involve Haywood personally, is described as one of the worst moments in their career.

Scott shares that his lip was injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage where their movements somehow collided, causing Charles' elbow or wrist to hit Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.

After that, we started singing "Need You Now," and it was a dramatic moment. We were really getting into the performance when he suddenly pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.

The story made all three members of Lady A laugh, so it may have turned into a cherished memory over time. The complete interview can be listened to on the Taste of Country Nights podcast, available on various platforms. Just search for it and listen to the unedited version.
