According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will be performing with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together onstage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs covered the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, helping it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his team stating there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Although she has not been very visible in the media during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also stated that while she never anticipated being on the country charts, she is grateful for the honor.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year, a recognition given exclusively to songwriters. Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the podium after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. It is truly amazing," the message stated. "I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammys. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
