According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't frequently appear in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she is rumored to perform with Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. This song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most memorable moments of the event. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when her last tour ended.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and artist. Despite the country cover's success, his team confirmed that there are currently no plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has been mostly private about the song's popularity, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated her song being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given only to the songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he is successful, it will be his first Grammy win.
The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be televised from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
