Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform “Fast Car” Together at the 2024 Grammys: A Historic Moment in Music History

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make many public appearances, might be making a special exception to perform with Luke Combs at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage, singing Chapman's hit song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Although Chapman has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, she has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new generation of fans for embracing her song. She mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she felt honored to be a part of it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege to have my song acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs is up for an award for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh time being nominated for a Grammy, and if he wins, it will be his first time receiving the golden gramophone trophy.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
