According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will potentially perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. This song was originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 80s, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Variety reports that she has only been seen on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite reaching No. 1 with his country cover, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Even though she has kept a low profile during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. Chapman mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but felt honored by the recognition.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This marked her as the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
