Lady A Reflects on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reflects on their most memorable moments, both positive and negative, in the world of country music. Over the past two decades, they have achieved great success, winning numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards.

The way they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have progressed.

I inquired about the trio's experiences in country music, asking them to share their most memorable and challenging days. Kelley was the first to share her story.

"When we performed 'Love Don't Live Here' at the CMAs for the first time, it was a surreal experience. I don't think I'll ever forget that feeling of 'Wow, this is really happening,'" he recalls.

Scott also had a favorite memory that brought him great joy.

Her favorite memory was when they were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Dave Haywood added onto Scott's response by expressing his agreement with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a special moment for us. Our families came to town to support us, and it was a very emotional experience. It was like a big "wow" moment for us.

However, it hasn't always been easy and pleasant for Kelley. They remember a specific "worst" day when they were stuck in a situation that could have been one of their best days.

"Ugh, I just discovered that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but unfortunately, our bus broke down on the roadside."

Scott recalls a really difficult day when she, along with many others in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as a very tough time.

Haywood recalls a difficult day in country music when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, an incident that did not involve Haywood at all.

Scott mentioned that his lip was injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. They were on a rotating stage and somehow collided, causing Charles' elbow or wrist to hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, which then struck his lip.

Then we started singing "Need You Now" and it became really intense. We were really getting into the performance when he suddenly pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.

The three members of Lady A found this story amusing, indicating that it may have become a cherished memory over time. You can listen to the complete interview in its original form by searching for Taste of Country Nights, On Demand on your preferred podcast platform.
