Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Joining Forces for a Show-Stopping Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards: What to Expect

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who is not usually seen in public these days, is expected to make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which quickly became a country radio chart topper.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that he currently has no scheduled performances with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform with Chapman ever came up.

Chapman, despite not being in the spotlight much when the song became popular again, shared a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts but felt honored by it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't join you all tonight. It's really special for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a heartfelt thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the event and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
