Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with “Fast Car” Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman will be performing with Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 on his album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Reports say that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity came up in the future.

Even though she has not been very present in the media after the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought her music would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of "Fast Car," became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially grateful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is the seventh time he has been nominated for an award at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and streamed live on Paramount+.
