According to a report from Variety, it has been stated that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the public eye, is said to possibly make an exception for this event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team clarified that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though Chapman has mostly kept a low profile regarding the renewed popularity of the song, she has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her music. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so the honor went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend tonight, but I am grateful for my song being acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held in Los Angeles, California at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
