Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Make Grammy History with ‘Fast Car’ Performance

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will be performing alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's hit song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover's success, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Even though she has mostly avoided media attention since the song regained popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be shown live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
