According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will be performing with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a popular song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed highlights of the event. Variety reports that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together did come up.
While maintaining a low profile during the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans loving her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole creator of the song. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read aloud after her win was announced.
