Lady A remembers the highlights and low points of their career in country music. They have achieved great success, winning numerous CMA, ACM, and Grammy Awards over their almost two-decade-long tenure as a band.
The way they met is quite usual: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s when Myspace was popular. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discussed their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have achieved success.
I inquired the group to share with me their most memorable experiences in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first one to share their story.
"When we had the opportunity to perform at the CMAs for the first time, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' It was a surreal moment for me, feeling like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he recalls.
Scott also had a very cherished memory of his best moment.
She recalls that the best day for them was when they received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.
Dave Haywood followed up on Scott's response by stating that he agreed with her.
The first time we performed at the Opry was a very special moment for us. Our families came to town to support us, and it was a very emotional experience. It was a moment that made us say "wow!"
However, it hasn't always been easy for Kelley. They remember a specific "worst" day when they were stuck in a situation that could have been great.
"Ugh, it's frustrating to learn that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but at the same time, our tour bus broke down on the roadside."
Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and the group, along with many others in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the hardest day she has ever experienced.
Haywood shared that the most challenging day he experienced in country music was when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, even though it wasn't him who was involved in the incident.
Scott shared that his lip was injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage where their movements caused a collision, resulting in Charles' elbow or wrist hitting the bottom of Scott's microphone and causing it to hit his lip.
Then suddenly we started singing the song "Need You Now," she explained, and it felt like a dramatic moment as we were really getting into the performance. But then he pointed out that there was blood on her teeth.
The three members of Lady A found a particular story funny, indicating that it may have become a cherished memory over time.
