Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Collaboration and Potential Grammy Win

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who usually avoids public appearances, may be making a special exception to perform with Luke Combs at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment, possibly becoming one of the most discussed highlights of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and performer. Even though his country cover of the song reached No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were no immediate plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together did come up.

Even though she has mostly avoided the spotlight when it comes to the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new wave of fans enjoying her music. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given only to the songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, and I want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he ends up winning, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
