Lady A’s Highs and Lows: Reflecting on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reflects on their most memorable and challenging moments in the country music industry. Over the course of almost two decades, they have achieved great success, including winning numerous CMA, ACM, and Grammy Awards. They are considered one of the most successful country groups in history.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have progressed.

I inquired about the trio's most memorable experiences in country music, and they each shared their highs and lows. Kelley was the first to share her story.

"When we had our first opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' I doubt I will ever experience a moment quite like that again, where it felt so surreal and like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he recalls.

Scott had a very cherished memory of his best experience as well:

According to her, the most memorable day was when they received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Dave Haywood agreed with Scott's response by adding his own thoughts to it.

"The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience, especially because our families were there to support us. It was an emotional moment that left us feeling amazed."

However, it hasn't always been easy for Kelley. They remember a specific day that was particularly difficult, when they were stuck in a situation that should have been enjoyable.

"Ugh, just found out that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts and now our bus is stuck on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and the group, along with many other artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the most heart-wrenching moment.

Haywood describes his most challenging experience in country music as the day when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone. This incident did not involve Haywood himself.

Scott described how his lip was injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The stage was rotating, and they somehow collided, causing Charles' elbow or wrist to hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.

Then we started singing "Need You Now," and it became really dramatic. We were getting into the performance, and suddenly he pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.

The story told by Lady A made all three members laugh, suggesting that it has become a cherished memory over time. The complete interview is available for listening on Taste of Country Nights, On Demand, or any other platform where podcasts are accessible. Just search for it to listen.
