Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at the 2024 Grammys: A Potential Game-Changing Moment

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making public appearances often.

According to sources familiar with the musicians, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. This song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late '80s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which led to his version of "Fast Car" topping the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her latest tour.

However, Combs has been open about his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside its original songwriter and performer. After his country cover of the song reached No. 1 in July, his team released a statement clarifying that there were no immediate plans for a collaboration with Chapman. Nonetheless, they expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of it happening in the future.

Chapman has not been very visible in the public eye since the song "Fast Car" gained popularity again, but she has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with the song. She mentioned feeling happy for Combs and grateful for the new fans who have embraced her song as it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman admitted that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she is honored to have it there.

At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight with all of you. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its first release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
