Unexpected Collaboration: Luke Combs Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ with Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she is expected to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for keeping a low profile, making public appearances a rare occurrence for her.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs covered the song on his album Gettin' Old, bringing it back into popularity and making it a hit on country radio.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, but they would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Although she has not been very visible in public since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who appreciate her song. Chapman also stated that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she felt honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to the songwriter, which in this case was Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read on her behalf after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
