According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Although Tracy Chapman usually avoids public appearances, she may make an exception for this special event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from recurring poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album, Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. She has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. His team stated in July that, despite the country cover reaching No. 1, there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be very enthusiastic if the chance to do so presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the number one spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
