According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, is possibly going to make an appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Sources say she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.
Even though she has been mostly quiet about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is grateful for the recognition.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
