Lady A Reflect on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reflects on their favorite and most challenging moments in the world of country music. With numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards under their belt, they have solidified their status as one of the most accomplished country groups in the industry over the course of two decades.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his profile on Myspace. This happened in the early 2000s when Myspace was still popular. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discussed their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have achieved success.

I inquired about the trio's experiences in country music, asking them to share both their most memorable and challenging moments. Kelley was the first one to share her thoughts.

"When we first had the opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we chose to sing 'Love Don't Live Here.' It was a moment where I felt like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he recalls.

Scott also had a very cherished memory that was his favorite.

Her favorite memory was receiving an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry as a member.

Dave Haywood supported Scott's response by agreeing with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience for us. Our families came to town to support us, making it even more special. It was an emotional moment for us, like a feeling of amazement and gratitude

However, it hasn't always been easy for Kelley. They remember a specific day that was particularly difficult, as they found themselves stranded when it should have been a great day.

"Ugh, it's frustrating that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but our bus broke down on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very painful day when she and her group, along with many other artists in country music, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the lowest point for her.

Haywood shared that the most challenging moment in his country music career was when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, even though it was not directed at him.

Scott described how his lip got injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. They were on a rotating stage and somehow their movements caused Charles' elbow or wrist to hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.

Then we started singing "Need You Now," and it felt like a dramatic moment. We were really getting into the performance when he suddenly pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.

The three members of Lady A found this story amusing, suggesting that it may have become a cherished memory over time.
