Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Chapman will be performing with Luke Combs to sing "Fast Car," a song from the late 1980s that talks about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 on his album "Gettin' Old," leading to it becoming a hit on country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Variety reports that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover's success, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Even though she has been mostly avoiding the spotlight since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements to show her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness and gratitude when the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, and mentioned that she was honored to see a new generation of fans enjoying her music in the country genre. Chapman never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is grateful for the opportunity.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This honor is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. I am grateful and honored that my song has been acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, and a special thank you to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammys. This nomination is his seventh overall, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
