According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which propelled his version to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would come as a big surprise and probably be one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. His team stated in July that while there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy for Combs and grateful for a new group of fans who appreciate her song. Chapman also expressed her surprise at being on the country charts but stated that she is honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I wasn't able to join you all this evening. It's really special for my song to be acknowledged again after being released 35 years ago. I appreciate the recognition from the CMAs and want to give a special shoutout to Luke and all the 'Fast Car' fans."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. Viewers can watch the show on CBS or stream it live on Paramount+.
