According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," which is Chapman's folk-pop hit from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, and it quickly became a hit on country radio.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and artist. His team stated in July that while there were currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity ever came up.
Even though she has been mostly quiet in the media about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated her song being on the country charts, but she feels privileged to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter of the winning song. Chapman was not present during the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud on her behalf after her victory was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend the event tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and winning would earn him his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
