According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a big shock and will probably be one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As per Variety, she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Even though Chapman has been mostly private about the song's popularity, she has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked the new fans who have embraced her song. Chapman admitted that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. The honor is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud on stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the 'Fast Car' fans for their support."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
