Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to Variety, there is a report that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't appear in public often, is expected to make an exception for this event.

According to sources connected to the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which led to it becoming a hit on country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Sources say she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover's success, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.

Even though she has been mostly quiet about the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned feeling pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her music. She also mentioned feeling honored to see her song on the country charts, even though she never anticipated it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, and therefore went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after its release. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
