According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making public appearances frequently, making this potential performance a special occasion.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from cyclical poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel the song to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, which was when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that he currently has no scheduled performances with Chapman, but would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Chapman, who has mostly kept a low profile during the song's comeback, has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and "grateful" for a new group of fans enjoying her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to have her song on the country charts, even though she didn't anticipate it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This accolade is given to the songwriter, therefore Tracy Chapman, the songwriter, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event this evening. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
