Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with “Fast Car” Performance at the Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite her rare public appearances, Chapman may make an exception for this special event.

According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Reports say she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were currently no plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they did mention that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity did come up.

Although she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a younger audience appreciating her song. She also mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to the songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Despite not being present at the ceremony, Chapman did send a message to be read on her behalf from the stage after her win was declared.

"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
