Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, may make an exception to perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, it has been reported by Variety that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's hit song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Even though Chapman has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, she has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who have embraced her song. She mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, and this year it was awarded to Chapman, marking her as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Despite not being present at the ceremony, Chapman sent a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he ends up winning, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for streaming on Paramount+.
