Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with “Fast Car” Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will potentially be performing with Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has stated that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment that will likely be widely discussed. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the person who wrote and originally recorded it. After his country cover of the song reached number one in July, his team announced that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman, but that he would be thrilled if the chance ever came up.

Even though Chapman has been mostly private about the song's comeback, she has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned how she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read aloud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
