Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Make Grammy History With ‘Fast Car’ Performance

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite not making frequent public appearances, Chapman is likely to make an exception for this special event.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song unexpectedly became part of Combs' music in 2023 when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old, leading to "Fast Car" reaching the number one spot on country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Sources suggest that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity did come up.

Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has shown her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car" by making a few statements. When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she is proud to see it there now.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, and Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter of the winning song. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event tonight. It means a lot to me that my song is being recognized again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and give a special shoutout to Luke and all the 'Fast Car' fans."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammys. This nomination is his seventh time being recognized at the awards show. If he wins in this category, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on February 4, 2024. The event will be aired on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
