According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who is known for not making many public appearances, may make a special exception for this event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. This song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover becoming a hit, his team stated that he currently has no plans to collaborate with Chapman on stage. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has not been very visible in the media regarding the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." Following the song reaching the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans embracing her song. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to have her song on the country charts, despite not expecting it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given to songwriters only, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged once again, 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
