Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Moment in Music History

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will potentially perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' discography in 2023 when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old, leading to it reaching the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Reportedly, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.

Even though she has mostly kept a low profile regarding the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given only to the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she sent a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"Regrettably, I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the awards ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. It will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
