According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite Tracy Chapman's limited public appearances, she may make an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, it has been reported by Variety that Tracy Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 and included in his album Gettin' Old, which resulted in his version of "Fast Car" reaching the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera for live performances three times since 2009, when she finished her latest tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, Combs' team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Although she has mostly stayed away from the public eye regarding the song's popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she had not anticipated being on the country charts, but she felt honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman received the honor as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged once again, 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for the Best Country Solo Performance award at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he is able to win, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
